If you love salt but hate what it does to your health, use Pansalt®!

Pansalt® has the taste, look and texture of common salt. Use it in exactly the same way; in the kitchen and at the table.

Cutting back on salt may help control blood pressure, but salt (the most widely used flavouring agent) is hard to replace.

If you don’t have the heart to give up salt… use Pansalt®!

Traditional low-sodium salt replacers have disappointed consumers because of their bitter and metallic aftertaste.

As health conscious consumers we are constantly looking for better tasting and healthier products. Pansalt® gives the same good taste and technological properties as regular salt but without the bitter aftertaste of other low-sodium salts.

Pansalt® was invented by a doctor in Finland after he realized that, in order to improve patient compliance to advice to reduce their sodium intake a drastic improvement in the taste of low sodium salt products was required. Many people buy rock salt or sea salt believing it to be a healthier option to table salt, but it is still only made up of sodium chloride and therefore has the same sodium content as table salt.

Pansalt® is a reduced sodium mineral salt (43% less Sodium than common salt), with a world patented formulation proven to deliver the full taste of salt - making it indistinguishable from common table salt.

Pansalt® has been sold on the continent for many years and is a household name used proudly by food manufacturers who incorporate it into their products. They even put the Pansalt logo on their packaging. You may have seen it if you have visited other countries. Pansalt® is also known by the brand names Pansuola® (Finland), CardiaHealth® (USA), or Pansalz® (Denmark).

Pansalt® contains sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium sulphate and the essential amino acid Lysine Hydrochloride (Pansalt's® secret weapon!) . The L-lysine enhances the saltiness and masks the bitter taste that comes from potassium chloride and magnesium sulphate.

Potassium, magnesium and lysine have been shown to greatly reduce the possible negative impact sodium can have on the body (supported by several international clinical and scientific studies - publications available on request).

Pansalt® offers a dual health benefit:

A Unique combination of potassium, magnesium & lysine increases the excretion of sodium from the body

Contains almost half of the sodium content found in common table salt or sea salt.

Frequently Asked Questions on Pansalt®

What is Pansalt®?

Pansalt® is a low-Sodium mineral salt containing iodine that has the taste, look and texture of common salt.
Pansalt® is composed of:

56-57% Sodium Chloride
28% Potassium Chloride
12% Magnesium Sulphate
2% Lysine HydroChloride
0.0036% Iodine

Does Pansalt® contain salt?

Yes. In fact, Pansalt® is salt. Its unique patented formula allows for the reduction of its sodium content. Pansalt® only has about half the sodium found in common salt and is also contains the essential minerals potassium and magnesium, not contained in common salt.

Who invented Pansalt®? and why?

Pansalt® was created by Heikki Karppanen, M.D., a Professor at the University of Helsinki, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Finland.

Dr. Karppanen became involved in the study of salt and its harmful effects after he learned about the high incidence of heart attacks leading to deaths among families in North Karelia, Finland where he lived. He later discovered that it was the high sodium and low mineral content in the soil in their area affecting the food chain that brought about these heart problems and deaths.

This inspired Dr. Karppanen towards the invention of Pansalt®. Together with Dr. Mildred Seelig, a Magnesium expert from the
American College of Nutrition, studies towards the development of Pansalt® were completed. The collaboration of the two experts may be found in the Journal of the College.

Where does Pansalt® get its name?

“Pan” means “something general”, so Pansalt® means the salt that can be used in all foods.

Is Pansalt® an organic food?

Pansalt® is a sodium-reduced mineral salt and has been approved as an ingredient for organic food products by the National Food Agency of Finland and the European Commission since 2001.

How is Pansalt® made?

Pansalt® is produced in Europe through a patented manufacturing process under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions. Its quality is equal to that for the making of pharmaceutical drugs.

Why is common salt harmful to me?

Common salt is 98-100% Sodium Chloride. Our body needs only small amounts of sodium to function properly. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a dietary salt intake of less than 5g per day due to its high sodium content.

Why is Pansalt® different from common salt?

Pansalt® was invented as a healthier alternative to common salt. sodium chloride, the primary component of common salt, is harmful to the body when consumed in excess of the recommended dietary intake (less than 5g per day, per person). Unlike common salt (98-100% sodium chloride or 40% sodium and 60% chloride), Pansalt® only contains 56-57% Sodium Chloride.

What are the advantages of using Pansalt®?

The advantages of using Pansalt® are many. Its primary benefit is the reduction of sodium, which also means a reduction in the risk of acquiring hypertension and its serious complications including strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.

Magnesium found in Pansalt® may be beneficial both in the excretion of excess or harmful sodium as well as in the secretion and function of Insulin in the body. Magnesium is also found in green vegetables, bran cereals and nuts and seeds. The lack of this essential mineral is related to high blood pressure and diabetes. A good source of information on further benefits of adequate magnesium intake is The Magnesium Factor by Dr. Mildred Seelig.

Potassium, another mineral component of Pansalt®, is helpful in getting rid of harmful sodium in the body, thus contributing to lowered blood pressure. A good reference is The Magnesium Solution for High Blood Pressure by Dr. Jay S Cohen.

Pansalt® also contains Lysine, an essential limiting amino acid required for making proteins in the body. Lysine does not naturally occur in the human body and is consumed from daily foods like those containing Pansalt®.

Lastly, Pansalt® contains Iodine. The deficiency of Iodine may lead to goitres

If I have reduced salt intake already, do I still need Pansalt®?

When we replace common salt with Pansalt®, we immediately reduce our predisposition to the effect of high sodium. The World Health Organization's recommended dietary salt intake of less than 5g per day is really a maximum, as the body only needs 1.2g of Sodium Chloride to function properly.

Who can use Pansalt®?

The average person who uses salt can use Pansalt®. Based on the numerous studies conducted on Pansalt®, it does not have any adverse effects and it even helps improve the therapeutic effects of treatment drugs for hypertension. People on anti-hypertensive medication and those on diuretics, as well as kidney-impaired patients are still advised however to consult their doctor prior to use of Pansalt®.

How do I use Pansalt®?

Pansalt® can be used the same way we use common salt. One gram of Pansalt® equals one gram of common salt.

Can I use Pansalt® in my cooking?

Yes. Pansalt® acts just like common salt. Use Pansalt® in the same amount by weight and in the same manner when cooking with salt.

Does it taste bitter like other low sodium salts?

Pansalt® tastes exactly like salt. Pansalt® has been professionally tested in Chicago, USA and found to be indistinguishable from salt. It has been used in the kitchens of McDonald’s restaurants in Finland for over 10 years and customers do not notice any difference in the taste of the food. Pansalt® does not have any bitter or metallic aftertaste; it will bring out the flavour of foods!

Do I have to cook my food separately from my family's food?

No. High sodium intake is harmful to everyone, children and adults alike. All the family will benefit from using Pansalt®.

I take medication for hypertension. Can I still take Pansalt®?

Yes. Pansalt® has been clinically proven to be effective in lowering blood pressure without interfering with anti-hypertensive medications. The laboratory-tested medications include Enalapril, Ramipril, Metoprolol, Felodipine and Carvedolol.

Can a person who has diabetes use Pansalt®?

Magnesium, an essential mineral component of Pansalt® is beneficial for diabetics as it helps in the secretion and function of Insulin in the body. Diabetic patients are advised to consult their doctor before using Pansalt®.

Can a person suffering from kidney disease use Pansalt®?

Kidney patients are generally advised to avoid additional sodium in their diet. . Diabetic patients are advised to consult their doctor before using Pansalt®.

Commercial Use

In 2005-2006, it was reported that 75% of the sodium we eat comes from processed food. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) set a target of reducing the population’s salt consumption from 9.5g/day to 6g/day by 2010.

Pansalt® has been used as a food ingredient in many reduced sodium products.

Pansalt® Substitution

Pansalt® can easily replace common salt in a formulation.

The following equations can be used to calculate specific levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) in a product or the amount of Pansalt® required in a formulation.

How much Pansalt® to replace in a formulation?

Pansalt is generally used on a 1:1 ratio. Adjustments may be required depending on pH (see table below)
